1:23-7:43: Is leader or entrepreneur development an important process? If the process is important why is that so? If not, why not?
7:44-33:42: In 2019 a Harvard Business Review article by Moldoveanu and Narayandas noted there are three main reasons for the disjointed state of leadership development: (1) A gap in motivations whereby organisations invest in executive development for their own long-term good, but individuals participate in order to enhance their skills and advance their careers, and they don’t necessarily remain with the employers who’ve paid for their training. (2) The second is the gap between the skills that executive development programs build and those that firms require particularly the interpersonal skills essential to thriving in today’s flat, networked, increasingly collaborative organizations. Traditional providers bring deep expertise in teaching cognitive skills and measuring their development, but they are far less experienced in teaching people how to communicate and work with one another effectively. (3) The third reason is the skills transfer gap. Simply put, few executives seem to take what they learn in the classroom and apply it to their jobs and the farther removed the locus of learning is from the locus of application, the larger this gap becomes.
33:43-36:51: What’s your view of these gaps taking into account the impact of the pandemic?
36:52-42:47: In your experience, what does effective leader / entrepreneur look like?
42:48-48:43: What advice can you share to help develop leaders and/or entrepreneurs?
48:44-49:05: Concluding remarks
